The Role of Councillors:

The Parish Council is elected to represent and listen to the views and reasonable wishes of the villagers and make decisions of their behalf. Its term of office lasts for four years. The last election was scheduled for May 7 2015. The election was uncontested.

Councillors are expected to:

  • Respond in a timely manner to the needs and views of the community

  • Attend monthly meetings

  • Conduct Parish affairs in a transparent manner

  • Act in a democratic way

  • Work collaboratively

  • Engage in constructive debate

  • Sign a declaration of acceptance of office

  • Give a written undertaking to abide by the Code of Conduct adopted by the Council

  • Complete a register of interests

  • During any meeting declare personal interests and if prejudicial leave the meeting for that item

  • Ensure that the Parish Council is professionally managed


Parish Council Duties:

The duties of the Parish Council are limited. This list indicates the extent of its functions:

  • Provision and maintenance of Bus Shelters and seats

  • Provision and maintenance of the Children’s Play Area

  • Maintenance of Eagle Field

  • Maintenance of Swan Pond and the surrounding green

  • Maintenance of the War Memorial

  • Provision and maintenance of planters

  • Provision and maintenance of Noticeboards

  • Carrying out litter picking and providing litter bins in addition to the service provided by Brentwood Borough Council

  • Planning Applications – The comments of the Parish Council are sought on any planning applications for the area

  • The power to make bye-laws

  • General Spending – Parish Councils can spend a limited amount of money on anything they deem of benefit to the community that is not covered by the other specific responsibilities described in this list

  • Gifts – Parish Councils may accept gifts
